Get out of town!

Published by hawkinsm at 9:49 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Every now and then I just have to get out of town and head for the other side of the island. If you have never been to the North Shore area of Haleiwa, Sunset Beach, or Sharks Cove, you really need to venture out and see what these areas have to offer.

Basically, a day on the North Shore is going to consist of beach time, good food, and maybe a little bit of shopping in one of the great stores in Haleiwa. I enjoy taking pictures on this side of the island- there is just always something great that I want to remember.

One of the best spots and less known about areas is Turtle Bay. Turtle Bay Resort itself is known world wide and is a very lovely place to stay. But many people do not know that you can park at the resort four about $5 and walk to the beach which is maintained by the resort. Remember, beaches are public here- there is no such thing as a private beach, and there must always be a point of access made available to beach goers. So that being said, the resort itself might be out of your budgetary means, or if you are a resident you have no reason to stay overnight. But the beach as well as the restaurant is open to the public. I found Turtle Bay to be very uncrowded and clean, and you can’t beat the view. Also, this is one of the better areas for snorkeling, especially for children because the water is calm and the bay is protected in part by a rock wall.

If you head to the other side of the island, and you are not familiar with the highways, do take a map. Also, fill up on gas before you leave town so if you get lost in Kaneohe, or turned around in Kailua (I’m guilty of this), you will not have to worry about running out of gas in an unfamiliar area.

Enjoy the island. For your convenience, here are links to a map of Oahu and the Haleiwa Chamber of Commerce.
